ENGINE RESTORE STAGE - Started 10/22/05 - Completed 12/22/06.
10/22/2005 When I took the engine out in the dismantling phase, I knew that it was going to be a chore to clean it up for painting.
10/22/2005 After plugging up the areas where water could get in, I sprayed the engine with degreasser.
10/22/2005 After soaking with engine degreasser, I pressure washed the engine and repeated the these steps 3 times. Removing big chunks of grease with a scraper. Some of the green engine paint started coming off which is good.
10/22/2005 At this point, I started looking at the valves, the state of the head, and realized, this little guy needs a complete overhaul. I took it down to a professional engine rebuilder for evaluation and he confirmed.
10/22/2005 Like, in most cases, a sever problem discovered. The valves did not look good, but one of the holes in the block was bored a bigger size, I can't fix this, so I need to take it in and have it checked out.
11/5/2005 I took the engine to the best engine rebuild place in town to be looked at. Sure enough, there were problems. Here, the cylinders holes are different sizes.
11/5/2005 Here you see the problem with the valves, none of the valves were sitting properly due to the pitted spots. And, in one of the valve stems it is way out of position
11/5/2006 A closer looke at the pitting on the valves, so this engine needs a complete rebuild. I am now leaving it in the hands of the professionals.
11/5/2006 The crank shafted was inspected and it looked good.
11/5/2006 The Piston rings were different sizes. This implies we had a bubba rebuild and not someone who was trying to keep the engine running for a long time. This will be fixed
11/25/2006 We opted to put in the hot seat rings for the unleaded gas. If you don't put these rings in the valves, the unleaded gas will eventually detereriate the edges. This alloy will allow the engine to run on Unleaded for ever.
11/30/2006 Everything gets bead blasted and checked for cracks with magna-flux. Here the head, is bead blasted and looks great. Remember this was a NOS GPW head
1/6/2006 Here the new nickel valve hot seats are installed. Looking good.
1/6/2006 Remember that problem with the hole that was tapped to large? Here an insert will be installed so my F bolts will fit properly.
1/6/2006 New pistons are ready to install, these puppies should do a good job.
1/6/2006 Ok, cylinders bored out, new sleeve added, and the nickel hot seats installed. Ready to put back together.
1/20/2006 Engine completed, with F bolts installed. Looks great, need to finish the Tranny so we can start this up!
