Steering Rods RESTORE STAGE - Started in Sept of 2005. Took a couple days to complete.
9/15/2005 From the begining of the project, I knew the tierods were going to be an issue. Besides the grundge, the zerks would now allow grease, so I set out to clean and replace the ends
9/15/2005 Wow, what a pain, the tie rod ends would not come out of the steering arms, so I went to Harbor freight and bought a small, cheap puller
9/15/2005 What a pain, the tie rod ends are frozen on after 60 years, so we soaked in penetrating oil and after a few days tried to brake them loose. Still would not come. Applied some heat and that helped
9/15/2005 I had to call my father to come help me figure this one out. After heating we started beating them, and they finally broke. Note, there is one end with a left handed thread and one right.
9/24/2005 The steering rods had Ford USA, and GPW marked on them. I was expecting only an F script.
9/24/2005 The steering arm had a nice GPW lable on it.
9/24/2005 I blasted the rods, primed and painted them. I installed the tie rod ends to the same number of threads left (3) on each rod. So they should be the same length as what came off.
9/24/2005 I installed the rods to the steering arm, then to each of the wheel arms
9/24/2005 I bolted down the tie rod ends to the bellcrank, and it was an easy fit.
9/24/2005 Driver side tie rod end, bolted in just fine.
9/24/2005 Passenger side tie rod end, bolted in just fine.
