Axle, Leaf springs, Brakes RESTORE STAGE - Started in June of 2005. Took about 12 weeks (working weekends) to complete.
7/18/2005 The start of this phase was painful. Both of my axles have a ton of grundge on the them. I set my youngest son to help me use my needle scaler to help clean the grundge out of the nookes and crannies
7/18/2005
7/18/2005 Front axle is worse than the rear axle, more grundge anyway.
7/18/2005 Darryl D. had shown how he made some braces for the axles, I did the same to help carry these heavy beasts.
7/19/2005 Once the majority of the grundge was removed, I started wire brushing it. I didn't have a good place to sand blast, so I wire brushed the axle. I used different sized wire brushes to get in the nooks and crannies.
7/19/2005 After cleaning the brake drum I saw a clean Bendix branding
7/19/2005 There are many hidden holes that have grundge imbedded in them. usually where there is a bolt hole. I had to dig them out with a screw driver. While cleaning the axle, I was fighting the Brake pinion. These guys were frozen on, requiring much penatrating oil to finally remove so new brake shoes could be put on.
7/19/2005
7/25/2005 While I started the cleaning, I also looked at the brakes. Here you see the old shoes still had some level available. I replaced them anyway. I also inspected the teeth of the rear differential. Everything looked good.
7/25/2005
7/25/2005 While I had the drums out for cleaning, I cleaned the bearings and had my father re-grease them. He did this by putting a pile of grease in his hand and pressing the bearings into the grease until you see it coming out.
7/25/2005 After the rear axle gears where checked and the final wire brushing was coming to an end, my father shown here, was cleaning out the gear area with a little brake cleaner. We wanted to make sure no debris was hanging around in there.
7/25/2005 The leaf spring F-script U-Bolts cleaned up really well.
7/25/2005 Rear axle shaft was inspected and cleaned a nice f script is exposed
7/25/2005 Finally, the rear axle was put back together and we were able to put two coats of red oxide on. Looks good, and like new.
7/25/2005
7/25/2005 While all of this was going on, I had wired brushed my leaf springs to clear out as much dirt and grudge as possible. My sons helped me put a couple coats of primer.
7/25/2005
7/25/2005 Leaf springs completed and ready to go.
7/25/2005 After cleaning a portion of the Front axle I was able to see the F stamp on the axle.
7/25/2005 I was somewhat shocked on the amount of grease caked in this axle. Had to be 18oz just on this one side.
8/15/2005 The Front axles had a ton of grundge that needed to be removed.
8/15/2005 The first half of the cleaning was using a wire brush on my grinder and drill. I was able to remove the majority of the paint and dirt by doing this. But it takes a while
8/16/2005 Finding more F scripts is always nice as you go along the cleaning phases
8/17/2005 At first I thought the enourmous amount of grease was wrong to have in the axle knuckle. After posting a note on the G, it appears to be correct.
8/25/2005 Front axle is ready for primer. I wiped it down with xylene before primering.
8/25/2005 Primer completed.
8/26/2005 While I was painting, I sent my oldest son over to the blast cabinet to continue blasting the smaller parts such as the U bolts, Steering parts, etc.
8/26/2005 After blasting, the brake gaurds looked good, these were stamped with GPW and F scripted.
8/26/2005 Everything blasted, and ready for primer and painting and put back together.
9/2/2005 Front axle painted 319 lusterless, and the other pieces as well, no ready to reinstall everything
9/3/2005 I replaced the knuckle seals, and glad I did. These were NOS complete assemblies, and the fit terrific. I purchased them from George at Army Jeep parts.
9/10/2005 I installed the Front axle to the springs and frame. It looked very good with everything else that had already been done.
9/11/2005 After I replaced the brakes I had my oldest son, tighten them back onto the knuckles.
9/18/2005 Finally completed (expect the steering). I installed both wheels on the frame so I could remove the blocks I had them on. Looks good.
