Repairing a Waltham Speedometer

9/21/2008 The speedometer that came with my jeep purchase was the correct version for my 1945 GPW. It was the Waltham type with the distinct features of a wider and stuby needle, and a trip counter. This speedometer needs repair because the gears are not turning (appear to be frozen).

9/21/2008 I start the task by removing the bezel. There is no real easy way to do it except to pry back the bezel. I pry back about 65% of the bezel and then pop the bezel and glass off.

9/21/2008 On the back side of the speedometer are two screws which hold the housing in place. Unscrew these two, and the housing should drop out. In my case, the housing was frozen in place because of the surrounding crude. I shot it with some WD-40 waited a little bit and tapped on the rear posts and it popped out.

9/21/2008 As you can see in this picture, my faceplate looks really good. I have a little WD-40 oil on it but I don't think I will need a new faceplate.

9/21/2008 Now that the inner housing out of the outer housing I need to remove the faceplate. At first you will think it is pretty simple, and it is, but how do your remove the needle?

9/21/2008 On the Waltham Speedometer you remove the needle by gently turning the needle counter clockwise. You will feel the needle get loose as you continue to turn it. Be careful, as I have heard of people snapping the needle doing this. So go very slow.

9/21/2008 Once the needle has been removed, remove the two small screws on the faceplate and the faceplate will fall right off.
